Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced a ban on the sale of alcohol in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, citing its link to rising crime and antisocial behaviour.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, pointed to the involvement of both serving and former members of the military and other security agencies in encouraging civilian participation in criminal activities, including radicalism, prostitution, and other vices that contribute to terrorism.
The governor made these statements during the inauguration of a restructured task force responsible for shutting down illegal hotels, brothels, and criminal hideouts across the state.
He emphasized that no individual—whether a dismissed or serving security officer—should be above the law if the fight against crime and insurgency in Borno is to be successful.
Zulum noted that the alcohol ban was necessary due to the growing incidents of violence among rival groups, cultism, prostitution, drug abuse, and theft, all of which have led to the loss of lives and property.
The newly formed committee comprises representatives from the military, police, civil defence, and the civilian joint task force, working together to ensure a unified approach to restoring order. A co-chair of the committee acknowledged the serious security threats facing Maiduguri and detailed plans for addressing them.
