Nigeria Police Force Resumes Issuance of Tinted Glass Permits Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has resumed the issuance of tinted glass permits across the nation, following a directive from Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

This development was announced in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday.

The reinstatement of permits comes as a response to increasing public concerns regarding the harassment of vehicle owners by law enforcement officers over the use of factory-fitted tinted windows.

Adejobi stated, “Under the directive of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, the Nigeria Police Force has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide through a secure and user-friendly digital platform accessible at https://possap.gov.ng.”

The initiative aims to address the widespread public complaints about the mistreatment of motorists regarding their tinted windows.

It highlights the necessity for a clear, transparent, and accountable process to regularize the use of factory-fitted tinted glass on vehicles.

Emphasizing the commonality of modern vehicles designed with tinted windows for reasons of comfort and aesthetics, the police underscored the importance of establishing a formal system for their regulation.

Adejobi explained, “With modern automobiles increasingly featuring tinted windows, implementing a standardized system is essential to accommodate legitimate use while ensuring public safety.”

The statement also acknowledged that tinted vehicles are often misused for criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry.

This misuse poses operational challenges for law enforcement and threatens national security, as it limits police visibility and impairs effective law enforcement efforts.

The reactivation of the tinted glass permit system is seen as a strategic approach to differentiate between lawful users, including individuals with medical needs and members of the security community, and those misusing tinted windows for criminal purposes.

Adejobi noted that the reinstated system is expected to aid police investigations and bolster the overall security framework in Nigeria.

To ensure authenticity and facilitate ease of access, the new digital platform incorporates permits with QR codes and features a quick processing timeline.

“This system is designed to bolster police investigative capabilities and enhance national security efforts. Applicants can conveniently process their permits online, with identity verification conducted through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), along with biometric capture and background checks. The processing time has been streamlined to 72 hours, ensuring efficiency and prompt access,” stated Adejobi.

Additionally, to facilitate a smooth transition, a 30-day grace period has been established, effective from May 1, 2025, during which motorists are expected to comply, he noted.

Adejobi also mentioned that active enforcement will begin after the grace period.

He cautioned that officers who misuse the enforcement process will face sanctions.

“Enforcement will commence at the end of this period. Officers found to be engaging in unprofessional conduct, such as extortion or harassment during enforcement, will be dealt with decisively in accordance with existing disciplinary protocols,” he asserted.

The Inspector-General assured the public of the Force’s commitment to modern policing, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and public cooperation.

“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates the Force’s dedication to a technology-driven and citizen-focused policing strategy.

He encourages the public to support this initiative for the benefit of safer roads, improved public trust, and a more secure Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
