Low Turnout as Only 200 South-East Youths Register for Ongoing Nigerian Army Recruitment, Says Brig.-Gen. Ekeator

In a concerning development highlighting regional disparities in national recruitment drives, the Nigerian Army has revealed that only 200 youths from the South-East geopolitical zone have registered for the ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise. This revelation was made by Brigadier-General Chima Ekeator, the head of the Army Force Headquarters Recruitment Sensitisation Team, during a briefing in Anambra State.

Brig.-Gen. Ekeator expressed disappointment over the low participation rate from the region, especially considering the numerous opportunities the Army offers in terms of career growth, education, discipline, and national service. He emphasized that the recruitment process remains transparent, merit-based, and entirely free, urging eligible youths to seize the opportunity rather than be swayed by misinformation or fear.

According to Ekeator, the Army has intensified its sensitisation campaign in the South-East to address misconceptions about military service and to encourage more young people to consider joining the force. “We are reaching out to traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth organizations to raise awareness. The Army belongs to all Nigerians, and every region has a vital role to play in our collective security,” he said.

The General also dispelled rumours of bias or marginalisation in the recruitment process, stressing that the Nigerian Army is committed to unity and equal representation from all parts of the country. He appealed to parents and guardians to support their children in pursuing a military career, highlighting the strategic importance of full regional participation in national defence.

The recruitment exercise, which is currently ongoing, forms part of the Army’s efforts to bolster its personnel strength and ensure adequate manpower to address rising security challenges across the nation.
