In a tragic incident in Kwara State, three men allegedly killed a 34-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Rafiu Akano, to steal his motorcycle. According to Fusion Chronicles Nigeria Newspaper, the suspects, identified as Peter Samuel, Jeremiah Tiozinda, and Sunday Agbenke, reportedly admitted to planning and carrying out the crime, aiming to sell the motorcycle for money. According to Samuel, the main suspect, they were desperate to transport his wife’s corpse home for burial.
The incident happened on Sunday in Asunlere village, Oke-Oyi, in Ilorin East Local Government Area. Samuel said that his friend, Sunday Agbenke, gave him the victim’s phone number, knowing Rafiu had recently bought a new motorcycle. Samuel and his accomplices then hired Rafiu to take them to Oloru in Moro Local Government Area.
According to Samuel’s confession, they lured Rafiu to a deserted location under the pretense of needing a ride. Once there, Samuel pretended he needed to relieve himself, and as Rafiu stopped, Tiozinda struck him on the head. Rafiu tried to escape but was overpowered, and Samuel allegedly used a cutlass to sever his head.
After the attack, they threw Rafiu’s head and the weapon into a nearby river and attempted to flee with his motorcycle. However, they were forced to abandon it when they were spotted by a local vigilante team. A phone left at the scene eventually led the police to arrest the three suspects.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted.
