Kogi State authorities have initiated an investigation following the escape of twelve inmates from the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe during the early hours of Monday. The state government confirmed the incident in a statement released by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Commissioner for Information and Communication.
Fanwo praised security operatives for their rapid response to the jailbreak, describing the event as “deeply regrettable.” He emphasized that the government is implementing measures to bolster facility security and prevent future breaches.
Notably, preliminary reports suggesting the inmates fled through a tower without causing structural damage have sparked scrutiny. “This anomaly demands a comprehensive inquiry to uncover the escape’s root causes, apprehend the fugitives, and probe potential internal collusion,” Fanwo stated.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has instructed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with federal corrections officials and law enforcement agencies to fortify prison infrastructure and protocols. The commissioner further reiterated the state’s pledge to provide federal agencies with enhanced logistical support to strengthen security operations.
Addressing public concerns, Fanwo urged calm, assuring residents that stability had been restored. “There is no reason for alarm. We urge citizens to continue their daily routines with confidence, as safeguarding lives and property remains our utmost priority,” he affirmed.
